Problem-solving proficiency has become a valued educational outcome in schooling systems in recent decades. This is not surprising considering that problem-solving skills lead to successful outcomes both in specific learning areas such as mathematics and also in more general contexts.

Definitions of problem solving from both educational and psychological research are plentiful. Several definitions explain that problem solving involves the application of cognitive processes to progress from an initial problem state to a specified goal state where the means for doing so is not immediately obvious. This notion of goal-directed cognitive processing is relatively common in definitions of problem solving. However, the problem types, problem-solving contexts and associated learning objectives can be diverse.

Problem-solving assessment tasks can be produced in a variety of forms including, as examples, paper-and-pencil multiple-choice tests, complex technology-based simulations and vocational performance assessments. The assessment of problem-solving behaviours is both challenging and fascinating. Browse the examples in assessmentfocus.com and see for yourself.
